Various roses and flowers

IMG_4234.JPG

From May 2024, I will be introducing roses blooming in my garden and flowers that complement them.

For information on how to grow and care for them, please consult a professional gardener.

Leave it to the website

I'll be writing down whatever comes to mind, so please bear with me.

This plant
Dieffenbachia seguine

It must have been over 30 years ago, but there were lots of potted plants in the restaurant at the golf course, and the gardener was tending to them. He was pruning the stems that were growing from the bottom, and since he was going to throw them away, I took some and grew them.

The location where we keep it has remained the same for a long time, and it usually reaches the ceiling in about four years.
I cut it from about 20cm above the ground, planted it in a pot with fresh soil, and it's now grown into a member of the family! (^^♪

It's a low-maintenance plant that doesn't get sick and can withstand occasional watering.
IMG_5591_edited.jpg

We'd been having warm days, so I was happy thinking spring was approaching, but then it snowed for two days straight.

IMG_5576.JPG

Even the thin branches of the rose bush are covered in this much dust. I'm worried about the new buds.

IMG_5579.JPG
The Christmas roses I've been waiting for have finally bloomed, but I wonder if they'll wilt...

Something's wrong with my Christmas roses?

Christmas roses usually bloom in full by mid-February, but this year only a few have bloomed. Last year, many withered due to the summer heat. I wonder if that's a contributing factor.

The flower buds look like this now.

IMG_5559_edited.jpg

These red flowers are from flowers that have recently bloomed.

The petals seem a bit small.

IMG_5560_edited.jpg

This single white plant is the only one that started blooming around Christmas.

There are still buds coming out.

We've been having really cold mornings lately (>_<)
It's been cold every day, with temperatures ranging from -7°C to -5°C.

Amidst all this, as you step out the front door, you are greeted by camellias and sasanqua flowers.
It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
IMG_5528_edited.jpg
IMG_5524_edited.jpg

I tried laying down concrete blocks to help control weeds in my flower bed.

The weeds grew unchecked in this summer's heat, and removing them was a real chore. I was completely exhausted!
Considering my own physical limitations, I tried laying down blocks in four places to reduce the amount of weed growth . (November 23, 2025)

🌹 Rose Cuttings 🌹
There were many different rose cutting videos on YouTube, so I chose one that looked easy and gave it a try.

I planted so many cuttings too late that only 3 rooted, and only 1 grew (^-^;
Cutting seedling trays are available as a set with a saucer and lid.
IMG_5486_edited.jpg
The last remaining plant has grown this much. If it can withstand the winter cold, I will plant it in the garden in the spring. It is a vine called "Rosa centifolia".

I noticed that the stems of the rose bushes were quite withered after I removed some of the buds, so I decided to tidy them up. 2025.9.21

IMG_5479_edited.jpg
This rose is "Cardinal" and was planted in 1992.
This is the oldest plant we got the year we built our house. It still produces shoots from the sides every year, and the flowers bloom for a long time, making it an excellent variety.

The intense heat continues, doesn't it? (>_<)
Until last year, I rarely turned on the air conditioner in the morning, and even though I'm quite tolerant of the heat, this year the air conditioner has been running every morning.

These flowers are blooming despite the heat . (August 26, 2025)

🌺Sapphinia Art🌺

These are lovely flowers registered by Suntory. I enjoy growing them in pots every year, but this year, unfortunately, the heat has caused the flowers to turn white (^-^;

🌹The roses in my garden have finished their second bloom.🌹

I posted some photos of roses I had taken earlier, but this year all the flowers were small and there were fewer of them than usual.

Flowers nestled beside roses

This year's flowers were battered by the rain and looked rather wilted. They might have even lost out to the weeds (>_<)
Every year, the flowers that cover the entire garden from self-sown seeds seem to change. This year, larkspur is in full bloom, last year it was foxglove, and the year before that it was orlaya blooming everywhere.

🌹My favorite roses have bloomed again this year🌹

Since the roses started to bloom, we've had rain yesterday and sunshine today, which has resulted in fewer buds forming, making for a somewhat disappointing spring rose season. I really wanted to take a picture of them all in full bloom...
But I'm so happy they bloomed! ♪
2025.6.6

⛈ The flowers were in terrible condition due to the heavy rain during the night... ⛈

The tall "larkspur" and the soft-stemmed "Eschscholzia californica" were hanging down onto the rose bush, damaging the new shoots and covering the surrounding flowers, so I was scrambling to tidy them up this morning, getting my clothes soaked in the process. They're still in the middle of blooming, so I feel bad about what I've done to them~ (>_<) 2025.6.4

Hedge trimming

We had planted flowering trees along the road to act as a windbreak, but after the Great East Japan Earthquake, we cut down trees that were about twice as tall in half.

Considering our age, we wanted to be able to prune without having to climb a ladder...
When I planted them, they were thin trees about 1 meter tall, but I never imagined they would grow this big, and pruning them has become a lot of work each year. These flowering trees are "Camellia sasanqua, Camellia japonica, and Osmanthus fragrans"♪

Dragonfly "Oniyanma"

This "Oniyanma" (giant dragonfly) has been a hot topic for several years now, and apparently it's a great item for repelling insects like bees if you wear it on your body. I recently bought one at a home improvement store.
It's become quite a bit cheaper now, so I tried attaching it to my hat when I'm working in the garden.
A small beehive will soon be built under the rose leaves, so you won't have to worry about being stung by bees anymore!

The flowers started blooming earlier than usual this year, but upon closer inspection, it seems the flowers are still incomplete. Perhaps they bloomed too early!

I've updated the rose planting plan again this year!

Sometimes I can't immediately remember the names of my roses when asked, so for the past 30 years I've been keeping a record of them, including the name, planting date, and where I bought them, as shown in the picture, so that I can also identify the flower color.

Last night, with rain forecast from the evening onwards and heavy downpours expected during the night, I was worried about the peony flowers that had just started to bloom, so I made a rain cover out of a blue tarp. This morning, it worked perfectly! It was my first attempt at this.

"The red berries are a gift from the birds!!"

It's even hotter today than yesterday. I was weeding behind the house when I was surprised to find a red berry sticking out from between the corrugated roofing of the arcade and the stone wall. I couldn't pull it out by hand, so I tried cutting the base with scissors.

Christmas rose
I had left the old leaves unpruned to protect the flower buds from the cold, but now that the flowers have started to bloom, I cut off the old leaves, leaving about 5 cm from the base. The flowers looked cramped because the leaves were covering them . 2025.3/14

This will be the third generation. The second generation didn't grow well or flower well, so I'm planting this one just in case.

I had decided that I wouldn't buy any more roses even if they withered.

I broke my promise because it's the most prominent rose in the garden.

I vow to ignore the fact that everything else outside of this area will wither and die, just like decluttering.

These flowers were in full bloom two years ago.

It's the largest rose in our garden.

The flowers bloomed like cherry blossoms.

The reason it withered was that as the stump thickened, the inside of the trunk

The cause was the construction of insect and ant nests.

IMG_3241.JPG

This rose is 130cm wide x 70cm long.

It was just a small spot with some blocks and soil, but the sapling was only about 1 meter tall, so I planted it without thinking about how big it would grow.

IMG_4640.JPG

What kind of root system did it have after it withered?

When I carefully dug into it, I was absolutely amazed.

I bought a young rose bush in 2002 and grew it in a simple enclosure made of concrete blocks and filled with soil.

23 years ago, I planted it as a young seedling and named it "Catherine."

Create an enclosure with blocks on the asphalt and fill it with soil.

The dimensions are 130 cm x 70 cm.

What kind of root system do these large trees have to grow in such a confined space?

Over 23 years, the branches have grown this thick, and they don't get infested with many insects.

This variety is resistant to disease.
